MARZABOTTO , a See also:

village of See also:Emilia, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Bologna, 17 M. S.S.W. of Bologna by See also:rail. Pop. (1901), 617 (village); 5272 (See also:commune). It lies in the valley of the See also:Reno, 443 ft. above See also:sea-level. In and below the grounds of the See also:Villa See also:Aria, See also:close to it, are the remains of an See also:Etruscan See also:town of the 5th See also:century B.C., protected on the See also:west by the mountains, on the See also:east and See also:south by the See also:river, which by a See also:change of course has destroyed about See also:half of it. The See also:acropolis was just below the villa: here remains of temples were found. The town See also:lay below the See also:modern high-road and was laid out on a rectangular See also:plan divided by See also:main streets into eight quarters, and these in turn into blocks or insulae. Cemeteries were found on the east and See also:north of the site. The name of the See also:place is unknown: it was partially inhabited later by the Gauls, but was not occupied by the See also:Romans. The discoveries of 1888-1889 (with references to previous See also:works) are described by E. Brizio in Monumenti dei Lincei (1891), i.
