W.S.W. of See also:Carlisle, on the Maryport & Carlisle railway. Pop. of See also:urban See also:district (1901), 11,897. It is irregularly built on the See also:shore of the Irish See also:Sea and on the cliffs above, at the mouth of the See also:river Ellen. Until 1750 there were only a few huts here, the spot being called Ellenioot, but at this See also:time the See also:harbour was built by See also:Humphrey Senhouse. In 1892 Maryport became an See also:independent See also:port with See also:Workington, See also:Whitehaven and See also:Millom subordinate to it. See also:Coal and See also:pig-See also:iron are exported from the See also:mining district inland, and See also:shipbuilding is carried on. There are also rope and See also:sail See also:works, iron-foundries, saw-See also:mills, breweries and tanneries.
