MAYEN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:Rhine See also:province, on the See also:northern declivity of the See also:Eifel range, 16 m. W. from See also:Coblenz, on the railway See also:Andernach-See also:Gerolstein. Pop. (1905), 13,435. It is still partly surrounded by See also:medieval walls, and the ruins of a See also:castle rise above the town. There are some small See also:industries, embracing textile manufactures, oil See also:mills and tanneries, and a See also:trade in See also:wine, while near the town are extensive quarries of See also:basalt. Having been a See also:Roman See also:settlement, Mayen became a town in 1291. In 1689 it was destroyed by the See also:French.
