MENGTSZE , a See also:

city in the S.E. of the See also:province of Yunnan, See also:China. Pop. about 12,000. It was selected by the See also:French See also:convention of 1886 as the seat of the overland See also:trade between See also:Tongking and Yunnan, and opened two years later. It is beautifully situated in the centre of a valley See also:basin on a See also:plateau 3500 ft. above See also:sea-level. The See also:country See also:round is fertile and well cultivated, artd the See also:place must have been one of considerable See also:wealth before the T'aip'See also:ing See also:rebellion, as the ruins of many See also:fine temples attest. A considerable overland trade has sprung up since the opening of Mengtsze. Of the import trade Hong-See also:Kong supplied 86%, and of the export trade 70%, See also:Cochin-China, Tongking and See also:Annam claiming the See also:remainder. See also:Tin (68%) and See also:opium (27.8%) are the See also:principal exports, and textiles (71%), mostly cottons, and See also:tobacco (4%) are the See also:chief imports. On the Tongking See also:side this trade follows the Red See also:River route as far as Manhao, which is distant from Mengtsze about 40 m., though the See also:navigation of the river is difficult. From Manhao the transit is by coolies or See also:pack animals. Concessions have been obtained by the French See also:government to build a See also:line of railway from the Tongking frontier at the See also:town of Laokay via Mengtsze to Yunnan-fu. The See also:climate is equable and healthy.
