MENTAWI , a See also:

chain of islands in the Dutch See also:East Indies, off the See also:west See also:coast of See also:Sumatra, between I° and 30 30' S. There are twenty-one islands in all, of which the See also:majority See also:lie See also:close to or between the four largest—Siberut, Sikaban or Sipora, See also:North Pageh and See also:South Pageh. The two last (also called Pagi or Poggy) are sometimes termed the See also:Nassau Islands. The See also:total See also:land See also:area is 1224 sq. m. The islands are included in the See also:administration of Padang, Sumatra. They are apparently volcanic. See also:Coral reefs lie off the coasts and render them difficult of See also:access. The natives in See also:language and customs See also:present See also:affinities with some Polynesians, and have been held to be a survival of the eastward See also:immigration of See also:people of Caucasian stock which took See also:place before those which established the " pre-See also:Malay "peoples (such as the See also:Dyaks and See also:Battas) in the Malay See also:Archipelago. The islands produce some coco-nuts, See also:sago, trepang and See also:timber.
