MIDDELBURG , a See also:

town of the See also:Transvaal, 98 M. E. by See also:rail of See also:Pretoria, and 251 M. W. of Louren90 Marques. Pop. (1904), 5o85—of whom 2343 were whites. It is prettily situated op the high veld, 5090 ft. above the See also:sea, on one of the See also:head streams of the Olif ants See also:River. Middelburg is the See also:chief town of an administrative See also:division of the same name, and is a trading centre for a large See also:district. It is also the centre of one of the richest See also:coal-See also:fields in See also:South See also:Africa. From some of the adjacent collieries excellent See also:steam coal is obtained. See also:Copper and See also:cobalt are found in the neighbourhood. Middelburg was chosen in 1901 as the See also:place of See also:conference for See also:peace negotiations between the See also:British and the Boers. After the occupation of Pretoria in See also:June 1900 by See also:Lord See also:Roberts the See also:Boer forces had been reduced to guerilla warfare, and Lord See also:Kitchener, learning that the Transvaal commandants were despondent, invited See also:General See also:Botha to enter into negotiations, on the basis of the recognition of British See also:sovereignty.

The conference between Lord Kitchener and General Botha was opened on the 28th of See also:

February and the negotiations, which ended in failure, were protracted until the 16th of See also:March (see TRANSVAAL: See also:History, § The See also:War of 1899-1902). Middelburg is also the name of a town in the Cape See also:Province, South Africa, 250 M. N. by W. of See also:Port See also:Elizabeth. Pop. (19o4), 6137.
