MINGRELIA , a former principality of See also:

Transcaucasia, which became subject to See also:Russia in 1804, and since 1867 has belonged to the See also:government of See also:Kutais. The See also:country corresponds to the See also:ancient See also:Colchis; and Sukhum Kaleh on the See also:Black See also:Sea See also:coast, which was the See also:capital under the Dadian See also:dynasty (1323-1694), is to be identified with the ancient Dioscurias, a See also:colony of See also:Miletus. The Mingrelians, who are closely akin to the Georgians, numbered 241,000 in 1902, and belong to the Orthodox See also:Greek See also:Church (see further KUTAIS and See also:CAUCASIA).
