Pop. (1897), 32,492. It is one of the See also:oldest towns of Caucasia, having been the See also:ancient capital (Aea or Kutaea) of See also:Colchis, and later the capital of See also:Imeretia (from ?92); See also:Procopius mentions it under the name of Kotatision. Persians, See also:Mongols, See also:Turks and Russians have again and again destroyed the town and its fortress. In 18ro it became Russian. It is situated on both See also:banks of the Rion See also:river, which is spanned by three See also:bridges. Its most remarkable See also:building is the ruined See also:cathedral, erected in the 11th See also:century by the Bagratids, the ruling See also:dynasty of See also:Georgia, and destroyed by the Turks in 1692; it is the most important representative extant of Georgian See also:architecture. The fort, mentioned by Procopius, is now a heap of ruins, destroyed by the Russians in 1770. The inhabitants make hats and silks, and See also:trade in agricultural produce and See also:wine. On the right See also:bank of the Rion is a government See also:model See also:garden, with a model See also:farm. KUT-EL-AMARA, a small town in See also:Turkish See also:Asia, on the See also:east bank of the See also:Tigris (32° 29' 19" N., 44 45' 37" E.) at the point where the See also:Shaft-el-See also:Hai leaves that stream. It is a coaling station of the steamers plying between See also:Basra and See also:Bagdad, and 'an important Turkish See also:post for the See also:control of the See also:lower Tigris.
