NUCERIA ALFATERNA (mod. Nocera Inferiore, q.v.) , an See also:

ancient See also:town of See also:Campania, See also:Italy, in the valley of the Sarnus (See also:Sarno), about to m. E. of the See also:modern See also:coast See also:line at Torre Annunziata, and 8 m. E. of See also:Pompeii. In the See also:period before the See also:Roman supremacy it appears to have been the See also:chief town in the valley of the Sarnus, See also:Herculaneum, Pompeii, See also:Stabiae and See also:Surrentum all being dependent upon it. The coins of the town See also:bear the See also:head of the See also:river See also:god. It maintained its See also:allegiance to See also:Rome till 309 B.C. when it joined the revolted See also:Samnites. In 308 it repulsed a Roman See also:attempt to See also:land at the mouth of the Sarnus, but in 307 it was besieged and surrendered. It obtained favour-able terms, and remained faithful to Rome even after See also:Cannae. See also:Hannibal reduced it in 216 by See also:starvation, and destroyed and plundered the town. The inhabitants returned when See also:peace was restored. Even during the Social See also:War Nuceria remained true to Rome, though the dependent towns joined the revolt; after it they were formed into See also:independent communities, and Nuceria received the territory of Stabiae, which had been destroyed by See also:Sulla in 89 B.C., as a See also:compensation.

In 73 B.C. it was plundered by See also:
