PALAMAU , a See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Chota-See also:Nagpur See also:division of See also:Bengal. It was formed out of Lohardaga, in 1894, and takes its name from a former See also:state or chiefship. The administrative headquarters are at Daltonganj: pop. (19o1), 5837. It consists of the See also:lower spurs of the Chota-Nagpur See also:plateau, sloping See also:north to the valley of the Son. See also:Area 4914 sq. m.; pop. (1901), 619,600, showing an increase of 3.8% in the See also:decade; See also:average See also:density, 126 persons per sq. m., being the lowest in all Bengal. Palamau suffered severely from drought in 1897. A See also:branch of the See also:East See also:Indian railway from the Son valley to the valuable coalfield near Daltonganj was opened in 1902. The only articles of export are See also:jungle produce, such as See also:lac and tussur See also:silk. The forests are unprofitable. See Palamau District Gazetteer (See also:Calcutta, 1907).
