PARCHIM (PARCHEM) , a See also:town of See also:Germany, in the See also:grand duchy of See also:Mecklenburg-See also:Schwerin, on the Elde, which flows through it in two arms, 23 M. S.E. of Schwerin, on the railway from See also:Ludwigslust to Neubrandenburg. Pop. (1905), 10,397. It was the birthplace of See also:Moltke, to whom a See also:monument was erected in 1876. It is an See also:ancient See also:place surrounded with walls, and contains a See also:Gothic town See also:hall and two interesting churches. Founded about 1210, Parchim was during See also:part of the 14th See also:century the See also:residence of one See also:branch of the See also:family of the See also:dukes of Mecklenburg; It became a prosperous See also:industrial town duringthe 16th century, but this prosperity was destroyed by the See also:Thirty Years' See also:War.
