PARTHENAY , a See also:

town of western See also:France, See also:capital of an See also:arrondissement in the See also:department of Deux-Sevres, 27 M. N.N.E. of See also:Niort, on the railway between that town and See also:Saumur. Pop. (1906), 5615. The town retains considerable portions of its See also:fine 13th-See also:century ramparts, including the See also:Porte St Jacques, a fortified gateway guarding an old See also:bridge over the Thouet. Amongst See also:ancient buildings of See also:interest are the See also:church of Ste Croix, of the 12th century, restored in 1885, with a 15th-century See also:belfry; the church of St See also:Laurent, also restored in See also:modern times, portions of whose walls date from the i 1th century; the ruined Romanesque portal of Notre-See also:Dame de la Couldre; and i m. See also:south-See also:west of the town the ancient church (12th century) of Parthenay-le-Vieux.
