PHOENIX ISLANDS , a See also:group of eight small islands in the Pacific Ocean, about 3° S., and 172° W., belonging to See also:Great See also:Britain. They have a See also:land See also:area about 16 sq. m. and a See also:population of 6o. Their names are Phoenix, See also:Gardner (Kemin), See also:Hull, See also:Sydney, Birnie, Enderbury, See also:Canton (See also:Mary) and McKean. To the See also:north-See also:west of the group (between the See also:equator and 1° N.) See also:lie two more islets—See also:Baker and Howland. The islands were annexed by Great Britain in 1889-1882.
