ORSEOLO I . (c. 928–997) acted as See also:ambassador to the See also:emperor See also:Otto I. before he was elected See also:doge in See also:August 976. Just previous to this event See also:part of See also:Venice had been burned down and Pietro began the rebuilding of St See also:Mark's See also:church and the ducal See also:palace. He is chiefly celebrated, however, for his piety and his generosity, and after holding See also:office for two years he See also:left Venice secretly and retired to a monastery in See also:Aquitaine, where he passed his remaining days. He was canonized in 1731.
