ORSEOLO II . (d. 1009), a son of the previous See also:doge, was himself elected to this See also:office in 991. He was a See also:great builder, but his See also:chief See also:work was to crush the pirates of the Adriatic See also:Sea and to bring a See also:long stretch of the Dalmatian See also:coast under the See also:rule of See also:Venice, thus relieving the See also:commerce of the See also:republic from a great and pressing danger. The See also:fleet which achieved this result was led by the doge in See also:person; it sailed on See also:Ascension See also:Day, the 9th of May 1000, and its progress was attended with uninterrupted success. In See also:honour of this victory the Venetians instituted the ceremony which afterwards See also:grew into the sposalizio del See also:mar, or See also:marriage of the sea, and which was celebrated each See also:year on Ascension Day, while the doge added to his See also:title that of See also:duke of See also:Dalmatia. In many other ways Pietro's services to the See also:state were considerable, and he may be said to be one of the chief founders of the commercial greatness of Venice. The doge was on very friendly terms with the See also:emperor See also:Otto III. and also with the emperors at See also:Constantinople, and in 1003 he sailed against the See also:Saracens and compelled them to raise the See also:siege of See also:Bari. In 1003 his son Giovanni was associated with him in the dogeship, and on Giovanni's See also:death in 1007 another son, Ottone, succeeded to this position.
