PISANI, VETTOR (d. 1380) , Venetian See also:admiral, was in command of the Venetian See also:fleet in 1378 during the See also:war against the Genoese, whom he defeated off See also:Capo d'Anzio; subsequently he recaptured See also:Cattaro, See also:Sebenico and Arbe, which had been seized by the Hungarians, the See also:allies of the Genoese. But the Genoese fleet completely defeated Pisani at See also:Pola in May 1379, and on his return to See also:Venice he was thrown into See also:prison. The enemy now pressed See also:home their victory, and besieged and captured See also:Chioggia, whereby Venice itself was in danger. The See also:people thereupon demanded the liberation of Pisani, in whose skill they had the fullest confidence. The See also:government gave way and appointed the aged See also:commander admiral of the fleet once more. Through his able See also:strategy and daring he recaptured Chioggia, defeated the Genoese and threatened See also:Genoa itself until that See also:republic agreed to See also:peace terms. Pisani died in 138o while on his way to See also:Manfredonia with a See also:squadron to See also:ship provisions.
