MANFREDONIA , a See also:

town and archiepiscopal see (with Viesti) of See also:Apulia, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Foggia, from which it is 22a M. N.E. by See also:rail, situated on the See also:coast, facing E., 13 ft. above See also:sea-level, to- the See also:south of See also:Monte See also:Gargano, and giving its name to the gulf to the See also:east of it. Pop. (1901), 11,549. It was founded by See also:Manfred in 1263, and destroyed by the See also:Turks in 162o; but the See also:medieval See also:castle of the Angevins and parts of the town walls are well preserved. In the See also:church of S. Domenico, the See also:chapel of the Maddalena contains old paintings of the 14th See also:century. Two See also:miles to the south-See also:west is the See also:fine See also:cathedral of S. Maria See also:Maggiore di Siponto, built in "7 in the Romanesque See also:style, with a See also:dome and See also:crypt. S. Leonardo, nearer Foggia, belonging to the See also:Teutonic See also:order, is of the same date. This marks the site of the See also:ancient Sipontum, the See also:harbour of See also:Arpi, which became a See also:Roman See also:colony in 194 s.C., and was not deserted in favour of Manfredonia until the 13th century, having become unhealthy owing to the stagnation of the See also:water in the lagoons.
