He studied the See also:pianoforte under See also:Van See also:Hal (known in See also:England as Vanhall), and in 1772 learned See also:composition from See also:Haydn, who became his dearest friend. He was appointed temporary maitre de chapelle at Strasburg in 1783, receiving a permanent See also:appointment to the See also:office in 1789. In 1791 he paid a successful visit to See also:London. He narrowly escaped the See also:guillotine on returning to Strasburg, and was only saved by the existence of a See also:cantata which he had written, and in which the See also:inspiration could fairly be claimed to be on the See also:side of See also:liberty; so that he was permitted to remain until 1795, when he migrated to See also:Paris. Here he opened a large See also:music See also:shop, published the first See also:complete edition of Haydn's quartets, and founded, in s8o7, the pianoforte manufactory which still bears his name. The latter years of his See also:life were spent in agricultural pursuits. The See also:July revolution of 183o inflicted upon him a severe See also:shock, and on the 14th of See also:November 1831 he died in Paris.
