town of See also:Brabant, See also:Belgium, about 9 m. S.W. of See also:Brussels, situated on the See also:river Senne and the See also:Charleroi See also:canal. Pop. (1904) 13,541. The See also:place is interesting chiefly on See also:account of its See also:fine See also:church of Notre See also:Dame, formerly dedicated to St See also:Martin. This church, a See also:good example of pure See also:Gothic, was begun in 1341 and finished in 1409. Its See also:principal See also:ornament is the See also:alabaster See also:altar, by J. Mone, completed in 1533. The See also:bronze See also:font See also:dates from 1446. Among the monuments is one in See also:black See also:marble to the dauphin See also:Joachim, son of See also:Louis XI., who died in 1460. In the See also:treasury of the church are many costly See also:objects presented by illustrious personages, among others by the See also:emperor See also:Charles V., See also:King See also:Henry VIII. of See also:England, Charles the Bold of See also:Burgundy, and several popes. The church is chiefly celebrated, however, for its miraculous See also:image of the Virgin.

Legend says that during a See also:siege the bullets fired into the town were caught by her in the folds of her See also:dress. Some of these are still shown in a See also:chest that stands in a See also:side See also:chapel. In consequence of this belief a See also:great See also:pilgrimage, attended by many thousands from all parts of Belgium, is paid annually to this church. The hotel de ville dates from 1616 and has been restored with more than See also:ordinary good See also:taste.
