PONCA , a tribe of See also:North-See also:American See also:Indians of Siouan stock. They were originally See also:part of the See also:Omaha tribe, with whom they lived near the Red See also:River of the North. They were driven westward by the Dakotas, and halted on the Ponca river, Dakota. After a See also:succession of See also:treaties and removals they were placed on a See also:reservation at the mouth of the Niobrara, where they were prospering, when their lands were forcibly taken from them, and they were removed to See also:Indian Territory (See also:Oklahoma).
