RAE BARELI , a See also:town and See also:district of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Lucknow See also:division of the See also:United Provinces. The town is on the See also:river Sai, 48 m. S.E. of Lucknow, on the Oudh & See also:Rohilkhand railway. Pop. (19or) 15,880. It possesses many architectural features, See also:chief of which is a strong and spacious fort erected in 1403, and constructed of bricks 2 ft. See also:long by r ft. thick and 11 wide. Among other See also:ancient buildings are the magnificent See also:palace and See also:tomb of See also:nawab Jahan See also:Khan, See also:governor in the See also:time of Shah Jahan, and four See also:fine mosques. The town is an important centre of See also:trade, and muslins and See also:cotton See also:cloth are See also:woven. The DISTRICT of RAE BARELI has an See also:area of 1748 sq. m. The See also:general aspect of the district is slightly undulating, and the See also:country is beautifully wooded. The See also:soil is remarkably fertile, and the cultivation of a high class. The See also:principal See also:rivers of the district are the See also:Ganges and the Sai: the former skirts it for J4 See also:miles and is everywhere navigable for boats of 40 tons; the latter traverses it from N.W. to S.E.

population was 1,033,761, showing a slight decrease during the See also:decade. The principal crops are See also:rice, See also:pulse, See also:wheat, See also:barley, See also:millet and See also:poppy. Rae Bareli town is connected with Lucknow by a See also:branch of the Oudh & Rohilkhand railway, which in 1898 was extended to See also:Benares.
