Pop. (1901) 31,0J3. This See also:town is a See also:modern creation of the See also:cotton See also:industry; at the beginning of the 19th See also:century it was a secluded See also:village in the See also:wild hilly See also:district of Rossendale See also:Forest. The cotton and woollen See also:industries employ the See also:majority of the inhabitants, and there are See also:stone quarries in the neighbourhood.
