ROMANSHORN , an important commercial See also:

town in the Swiss See also:canton of See also:Thurgau. It is situated on the See also:west See also:shore of the See also:lake of See also:Constance, and by See also:rail is 511 M. N.E. of See also:Zurich, 121 M. S.E. of Constance, and 10 m. N.W. of See also:Rorschach. In 1900 its See also:population was 4577, mostly See also:German-speaking, while there were 3093 Protestants to 1478 Romanists. Originally a small fishing See also:village, it belonged to the See also:abbot of St See also:Gall from 1432 to 1798, when it became See also:part of the canton of Thurgau. In 1856 the railway from Romanshorn to Zurich was opened, and this vastly increased the commercial importance of Romanshorn. Nowadays it is the centre of a See also:great transit See also:trade, as it communicates, by means of the lake, with the See also:principal towns on its shores. The See also:corn trade and that in See also:timber are among 'the most important, while there are many See also:industrial establishments. It is essentially a See also:modern commercial centre.
