RUDD , or RED-See also:

EYE (Leuciscus erythrophthalmus), a See also:fish of the Cyprinid See also:family, spread over See also:Europe, N. and S. of the See also:Alps, also found in See also:Asia See also:Minor, and See also:common in localities where there are still See also:waters with muddy bottom. The rudd and the See also:roach are very similar and frequently confused by anglers; the former differs principally in the more posterior dorsal fin, which is situated exactly opposite the space between the ventral and anal fins. It is a See also:fine fish, but little esteemed for See also:food, and rarely exceeds 12 in. in length and 2 lb in See also:weight. It feeds on small See also:freshwater animals and soft See also:vegetable See also:matter, and spawns in See also:April or May. It readily crosses with the See also:white See also:bream, and more rarely with the roach and See also:bleak.
