RYEZHITSA , a See also:

town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Vitebsk, 150 M. N.W. from the town of Vitebsk and on the railway between St See also:Petersburg and See also:Warsaw. Its See also:population increased from 7306 in 1867 to 1o,681 in 1897 ; but its importance is mainly See also:historical. The See also:cathedral is a See also:modern See also:building (1846). Ryezhitsa, or, as it is called in the Livonian See also:chronicles, Roziten, was founded in 1285 by the See also:Teutonic Knights to keep in subjection the See also:Lithuanians and Letts. The See also:castle was continually the See also:object of hostile attacks. In 1561 the Teutonic Knights gave it in See also:pawn to See also:Poland, and, though it was captured by the Russians in 1567 and 1577, and had its fortifications dismantled by the Swedes during the See also:war of 1656-60, it continued See also:Polish till 1773, when See also:White Russia was See also:united with the See also:Russian See also:empire.
