SABBIONETA , a See also:

town of See also:Lombardy, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Mantua, from which it is 20 m. S.W. by See also:steam See also:tramway, not far from the N. See also:bank of the Po, 59 ft. above See also:sea-level. Pop. (1901) 1835 (town); 7016 (See also:commune). Its See also:period of prosperity was under Vespasiano See also:Gonzaga (d. 1591), who was its See also:duke; by him it was transformed into a small " Residenzstadt." It was well fortified and built, and from this period date the ducal See also:palace (now the Municipio), the See also:theatre designed by Scomozzi, &c. The See also:church and the summer palace contain frescoes by the See also:Campi of See also:Cremona. Here in 1567 a See also:Hebrew See also:printing-See also:press was set up.
