SAVANNA or See also:SAVANNAH (Span. sdvana, a See also:sheet; See also:Late See also:Lat. sabanum, Gr. o0avov, a See also:linen See also:cloth), a See also:term applied either to a See also:plain covered with See also:snow or See also:ice, or, more generally, to a treeless plain. Its use in See also:English, more frequent formerly than now, is most See also:common in application to the See also:great plains of central See also:North See also:America, in which it is practically the See also:equivalent of " See also:prairie " (q.v.). In this application it was first used (accented thussavdna) by the See also:Spanish historian Gonzalo de See also:Oviedo y See also:Valdes in the 16th See also:century.
