He is famous as a See also:pioneer in the exploration of the monuments of See also:Greece, travel-See also:ling there in 1675-1676 with the Englishman (See also:Sir) See also:George Wheler (1650-1723), whose collection of antiquities was afterwards bequeathed to See also:Oxford University. Spon brought back many valuable treasures, coins, See also:inscriptions and See also:manuscripts, and in later years published various important See also:works on See also:archaeology, notably his Voyage d'Italie, de Dalmatie, de Grece et du See also:Levant (1678), and a Histoire de la republique de Geneve (168o).
