STAVROPOL , a See also:

town of See also:southern See also:Russia, See also:capital of the govern- ment of the same name, situated on a See also:plateau 2030 ft. above the See also:sea, on the See also:northern slope of the See also:Caucasus, 200 M. N.W. of See also:Vladikavkaz. It is connected by See also:rail (247 m.) with Rostov- on-the-See also:Don. Although founded only in 1776, it has grown rapidly, and had in 1885 a See also:population of 35,561, and of 46,965 in 1900. Stavropol is an episcopal see of the Orthodox See also:Greek The See also:climate is marked by rapid changes of temperature. The i See also:Church, and one of the best-built provincial towns of the See also:Russian See also:Empire, having wide streets, and houses mostly of See also:stone, with large gardens surrounding the houses. There are public See also:libraries, a See also:people's See also:palace and several scientific See also:societies. Stavropol has See also:flour-See also:mills and various small factories. Large See also:numbers of See also:cattle are sent to See also:Moscow and St See also:Petersburg, while cereals, See also:tallow and sheepskins are exported to Russia, and manufactured wares imported. Armenian, Georgian and See also:Persian merchants carry on a lively See also:trade in See also:local wares.
