STOLBERG , a See also:town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:Rhine See also:Province, situated on the Vichtbach, 7 M. E. of See also:Aix-la-Chapelle, on the See also:main See also:line of railway to See also:Cologne. Pop. (1905), 14,963. It contains two See also:Protestant and two See also:Roman See also:Catholic churches, a See also:castle occupying the site of one said to have been used by See also:Charlemagne as a See also:hunting seat. It is the centre of a very active and varied See also:industry, exporting its produce to all parts of the See also:world. The leading See also:branch is See also:metal-working, which is here carried on in important See also:zinc, See also:brass, and See also:iron foundries, smelting-See also:works of various kinds, puddling and See also:rolling works, and manufactories of needles, pins and other metal goods. The ore is mostly found in the mines around the town, but some is imported from a considerable distance. In or near the town there are also large chemical works, See also:glass-works, a See also:mirror-factory and various See also:minor establishments. Extensive See also:coal-mines in the neighbourhood provide the enormous See also:supply of See also:fuel demanded by the various See also:industries. The See also:industrial prosperity of the town was founded in the See also:middle of the 17th See also:century by See also:French religious refugees, who introduced the See also:art of brass-See also:founding.
