It lies on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:Severn, at the junction of the See also:Stour and the See also:Staffordshire and Worcestershire See also:canal. The town See also:grew up after the opening of the canal in 1768. Ironworks, See also:carpet-See also:weaving and tanneries occupy many hands. At Redstone, the site of a former important See also:ferry over the Severn, is a curious hermitage, excavated out of the red See also:sandstone bank.
