During his earlier years he practised See also:portraiture as a miniaturist; and, having studied in the See also:schools of the Royal See also:Academy, in 1818 he gained the See also:gold See also:medal for his " Una and the Red See also:Cross See also:Knight in the See also:Cave of Despair." In 1819 he exhibited at the Academy his " Hermia and See also:Helena." He was an intimate friend of See also:Keats the poet, whom he accompanied to See also:Italy in 182o and nursed till his See also:death in 1821. His picture of "The Death of See also:Alcibiades " then obtained for him an Academy travelling studentship, and he returned to See also:Rome, where he lived till 1841, marrying in 1828 the daughter of See also:Lord See also:Montgomerie, a See also:ward of See also:Lady Westmoreland, one of his See also:chief patrons, and mingling in the congenial See also:art circles of the See also:city. In 1861, after living in See also:England for nineteen years, mainly for the See also:education of his See also:children, he was appointed See also:British See also:consul at Rome, a See also:post which he held till 1872, and during a See also:great See also:part of the See also:time he also acted as See also:Italian consul. His most remarkable See also:work is the " Spectre See also:Ship" from the See also:Ancient Mariner. He painted ", Cordelia watching by the See also:Bed of See also:Lear," the " See also:Roman See also:Beggar," " Ariel," " The See also:Fountain," and " See also:Rienzi," executed a large See also:altar-piece for the See also:church of St See also:Paul at Rome, and produced many portraits, including one of See also:Baron See also:Bunsen and several of Keats. He died at Rome on. the 3rd of See also:August 1879. He had six children, ofwhom See also:Walter, See also:Arthur and See also:Ann (wife of See also:Sir See also:Charles See also:Newton) were well-known artists.
