The See also:town is regularly laid out on elevated ground on the See also:southern See also:shore of Tanga See also:Bay, and has a See also:population of about 6000. Among the public buildings are the See also:administrator's See also:residence, the See also:hospital, the See also:boma (See also:barracks), See also:Protestant and See also:Catholic churches and the See also:TANGANYIKA See also:government and See also:mission See also:schools. Tanga is the See also:port of the Usambara See also:district, where are many thriving plantations. The See also:harbour is entered by a broad channel five to eight fathoms deep. It is a port of See also:call for the German See also:mail steamers, and the starting-point of a railway to the Usambara See also:highlands.
