TELEMARK , or TIIELEMARte, a See also:

district of See also:southern See also:Norway, wholly comprised in the amt (See also:county) of Bratsberg. It covers the uplands and fjelds of the southward See also:projection of the See also:country, having its highest point in the Gaustafjeld (6200 ft.); and contains several large and beautiful lakes, as NordsjO, Bandaksvand, Tinsjo, Mjosvand and Totakvand. The two first are connected by the Bandaks See also:canal, a See also:fine See also:engineering See also:work giving See also:access from the See also:port of See also:Skien to Dalen at the See also:head of Bandaksvand. From Dalen, which may be reached by road from the railway at See also:Kongsberg (38 See also:miles) a See also:driving road much frequented by travellers runs See also:north-See also:west. It traverses a precipitous wooded See also:gorge, its course in parts hewn out of the See also:rock, and skirts the Borte and Grungedal lakes, follows the Flaathyl See also:river, passes the Vafos and Little Rjukanfos (waterfalls), and See also:Lake Voxli, and culminates at Haukelidsaeter, a station grandly situated among the fjelds at a height of 3085 ft. It rises to the See also:watershed (3715 ft.) and then, leaving the district, descends abruptly with a remarkable winding course to Roldal (58 miles from Dalen), and soon divides, one See also:branch surmoupting the Horrebraekke pass and continuing to See also:Odde, the other traversing the beautiful See also:Bratlandsdal. On the Kongsberg-Dalen road is Hitterdal, with a See also:good specimen of the Stavekirke or See also:medieval See also:timber-built See also:church. A divergence from this route may be made by way of Tinsjo to Fosso, where the Maan river forms a fine fall (Rjukanfos) of 415 ft.
