TOMPKINSVILLE , a former See also:

village of See also:Richmond See also:county, New See also:York, U.S.A., since 1898 a See also:part of the See also:borough of Richmond, New York See also:City. It is on the N.E. See also:shore of Staten See also:Island in New York See also:Bay, about 5z m. S. by W. of the See also:southern extremity of Manhattan Island, and is a residential See also:district of New York City. Tompkinsville was laid out in 1814–1815 upon a See also:tract of about 700 acres, most of which was owned by See also:Daniel D. See also:Tompkins. It was chartered as a village in 1823, but because of legal flaws the See also:charter was revoked soon after Tompkins's See also:death (in 1825), and thereafter the village was gradually absorbed by New See also:Brighton and Edgewater (both incorporated in 1866), though the locality continued to be called Tompkinsville.
