It was a flourishing See also:city in the See also:early See also:middle ages, but now has only a few houses and two interesting churches. The former See also:cathedral of S. Maria was founded in the 7th See also:century. The See also:present See also:building, a See also:basilica with columns, See also:dates from 864; the See also:nave was restored in Ioo8, in which See also:year the now ruined octagonal See also:baptistery was built. It contains large mosaics of the 12th century, strongly under See also:Byzantine See also:influence; those on the See also:west See also:wall represent the Resurrection and Last See also:Judgment. The seats for the priests are arranged See also:round the semicircular See also:apse, rising in steps with the See also:bishop's See also:throne in the centre—an arrangement unique in Italy. See also:Close by is S. Fosca, a See also:church of the 12th century, octagonal outside, with colonnades on five sides and a rectangular interior intended for a See also:dome which was never executed, beyond which is a three-apsed See also:choir. In the See also:local museum are four Mycenaean vases, one found in the island and another on the adjacent island of Mazzorbo, proving See also:direct intercourse with the See also:Aegean See also:Sea in prehistoric times.
