See also:TRADE WINDS , the name given to the winds which See also:blow from the tropical belts of high pressure towards the See also:equatorial See also:belt of See also:low pressure, from the See also:north-See also:east in the See also:northern hemisphere and from the See also:south-east in the See also:southern. They are exceedingly See also:regular, especially over the oceans, where there is no disturbing See also:influence from the See also:great See also:land masses. They receive their name from this feature, the See also:term " trade " being used in the otherwise obsolete sense of " direction " or " course " (cf. " tread "). The See also:area of their greatest influence may be taken to extend from about 3° to 35° N., and from the See also:equator to 28° S., though these belts are actually somewhat narrower at any given See also:season, as the whole See also:system of See also:surface winds over the globe moves north and south following the See also:sun. The See also:westerly winds prevalent in the belts respectively north of the northern tropical belt of high pressure, and south of the southern, are sometimes known as See also:anti-trades, their direction being opposite to that of the trade winds.
