VAALPENS (dusty-bellies) , a little-known nomadic See also:people of See also:South See also:Africa, who survive in small See also:groups in the See also:Zoutpansberg and Waterberg districts of the See also:Transvaal, especially along the Magalakwane See also:river. They are akin to the See also:Bushmen (q.v.). In 1905 their See also:total number was estimated by the Transvaal military authorities at " a few hundreds." The Vaalpens were so called by the Boers from the dusty look of their bodies, due, it is said, to their See also:habit of crawling along the ground when stalking See also:game. But their true See also:colour is See also:black. In height the men See also:average about 4 ft., i.e. somewhat less than the shortest Bushmen. Socially the Vaalpens occupy nearly as See also:low a position as even the Fuegians or the See also:extinct Tasmanians. They were nearly exterminated by the Aman'debele, a tribe of Zulu stock which entered the Transvaal about the beginning of the 19th See also:century. The Vaalpens, who live entirely by See also:hunting and trapping game, dwell in holes, caves or See also:rock-shelters. They See also:wear capes of skins, and procure the few implements they need in See also:exchange for skins, See also:ivory or See also:ostrich feathers. They See also:form See also:family groups of See also:thirty or See also:forty under a See also:chief or See also:patriarch, whose functions are purely domestic, as must be the See also:case where there are no arts or See also:industries, nothing but a knowledge of hunting and of See also:fire with which to See also:cook their meals. Their speech appears to be so full of clicks as to be incapable of expression by any clear phonetic See also:system. Hence it is impossible to say whether the Vaalpens possess any See also:folklore or other oral literature analogous to that of the Bushmen.
