W. of Madras See also:city. ' Pop. (1901) 43,537. It has a strongly built fortress, which was famous in the See also:wars of the Carnatic. It See also:dates traditionally from the 13th See also:century, but more probably only from the 17th. It is a See also:fine example of Indian military See also:architecture, and contains a See also:temple adorned with admirable sculptures. In 178o it withstood a See also:siege for two years by See also:Ryder See also:Ali. After the fall of See also:Seringapatam (1799) Vellore was selected as the See also:residence of the sons of Tippoo See also:Sahib, and to their intrigues has been attributed the See also:mutiny of the sepoys here in 18o6. An See also:American See also:mission manages a high school, raised to the See also:rank of a See also:college in 1898;. and the See also:police training school for the See also:presidency is also situated here.
