VRYHEID , a See also:

town of See also:northern See also:Natal, 291 M. by See also:rail N. by W. of See also:Durban. Pop. (1904) 2287, of whom 1344 were whites. It is the See also:chief town of a See also:district, of the same name, See also:rich in See also:mineral See also:wealth, including See also:copper, See also:coal and See also:gold. The coal-See also:fields of Hlobane are S.E. of the town. Originally See also:part of See also:Zululand the district of Vryheid was ceded by Dinizulu to a party of Boers under See also:Lucas See also:Meyer, who aided him to crush his opponents, and was proclaimed an See also:independent See also:state under the See also:title of the New See also:Republic in 1884. In 1888 it was incorporated with the See also:Transvaal and in 1903 annexed to Natal (see TRANSVAAL, § See also:History; and ZULULAND, § History). V-SHAPED DEPRESSION, in See also:meteorology, a narrow See also:area of See also:low pressure usually occurring between two adjacent See also:anti-cyclones, and taking the See also:form of a V or See also:tongue, as do the isobars representing it on a See also:weather-See also:chart. Such a depression may be regarded as a See also:projection from a cyclonic See also:system lying to one See also:side of the two anticyclones. A similar depression, however, is frequently formed within a larger area of depression, i.e. an See also:ordinary See also:cyclone, and sometimes develops so far as to have a See also:complete circulation of its own; it is then known as a " secondary." The See also:line of lowest depression following the See also:axis of the V brings with it heavy squalls and a sudden See also:change of See also:wind from one direction almost to the opposite. It is pre-ceded by signs of break in the weather such as usually See also:herald the approach of an ordinary cyclone, and is followed by the usual signs of clearance. The occurrence of a V-depression or secondary within an ordinary cyclonic system intensifies, often to a dangerous degree, the usual disturbances in the weather accompanying that system.

Conditions exactly opposite to those accompanying a V-shaped depression are provided by a " See also:

wedge " (q.v.).
