WEPENER , a See also:

town of the See also:Orange See also:Free See also:State, 82 m. by See also:rail S.E. of See also:Bloemfontein, and 2 M. W. of the Basuto border. Pop. (1904) 1366, of whom 822 were whites. It lies in a See also:rich See also:grain See also:district, and 3 M. See also:north by the See also:Caledon See also:river are large See also:flour See also:mills. The town, named after the See also:leader of the Boers in their See also:war with the Basuto See also:chief Moshesh in 1865, was founded in 1888. In See also:April 1900 it was successfully defended against the Boers under Christiaan de Wet by a Cape force of Irregulars commanded by See also:Colonel E. H. Dalgety.
