WERDAU , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Saxony, on the Pleisse, in the See also:industrial See also:district of See also:Zwickau, and 40 M. S. of See also:Leipzig. Pop. (1905) 19,473. Its See also:chief See also:industries are See also:cotton and See also:wool-See also:spinning and the See also:weaving of See also:cloth, but machinery of various kinds, See also:paper and a few other articles are also manufactured. In addition to the usual See also:schools, Werdau contains a weaving-school. The town is mentioned as See also:early as 1304 and in 1398 it was See also:purchased by the See also:margrave of See also:Meissen, who afterwards became elector of Saxony. See Stichard, Chronik der Fabrikstadt Werdau (2nd ed., Werdau, 1865).
