town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:Rhine See also:province, on the See also:river See also:Ruhr, 6 m. by See also:rail S. of See also:Essen. Pop. (1905) 11,029. It has an interesting See also:Roman See also:Catholic See also:church which belonged to the See also:Benedictine See also:abbey founded about 800 by St Ludger, whose See also:stone See also:coffin is preserved in the See also:crypt. The abbey buildings are used as a See also:prison. The manufacture of See also:cloth, woollens, shoes and See also:paper, See also:dyeing, tanning, See also:brewing and distilling are the See also:principal See also:industries. In the neighbourhood are stone quarries and See also:coal mines. Werden See also:grew up around the Benedictine abbey, which was dissolved in 1802. The Codex Argenteus of See also:Ulfilas, now in the university library at See also:Upsala, was discovered here in the 16th See also:century. See Flugge, Chronik der Stadt Werden (See also:Dusseldorf, 1887); and Ffihrer durch Werden (Werden, 1887).
