However, when Shere Ali in 1878 fled before the See also:British, he handed over the See also:government to Yakub, who, on his father's See also:death in the following See also:February, was See also:pro-claimed amir, and signed a treaty of See also:peace with the British at See also:Gandamak. He.agreed to receive a British See also:resident, and was in turn to receive a See also:subsidy and support against See also:foreign attack. But in See also:September of the same See also:year his revolted troops attacked the British residency, and the resident, See also:Sir See also:Louis See also:Cavagnari, and his See also:staff and See also:suite were cut to pieces. This See also:outrage was instantly avenged, for in See also:October See also:Earl (then Sir See also:Frederick) See also:Roberts with a large force defeated the Afghans on the 6th and took See also:possession of Kabul on the 12th. Yakub Khan thereupon abdicated, took See also:refuge in the British See also:camp, and was sent to See also:India on the 13th of See also:December. YAKU-SHIMA, an See also:island belonging to See also:Japan, lying S. of See also:Kin-shin, in 30° 30' N. and 130° 30' E. It is an irregular pentagon, 14 M. in width and the same in length. It is separated from Tanega-shima by the See also:Vincennes Strait (Yaku-kaikyo), 12; M. wide, and its See also:surface is broken by lofty mountains, of which Yae-dake rises to a height of 6515 ft., and Eboshi-dake to a height of 4840 ft. It is covered with dense See also:forest, in which are some of the finest See also:cryptomeria in Japan, known as Yaku-sugi.
