It was founded in 1868 and is the See also:chief town of the Marico See also:district, one of the most fertile regions of See also:South See also:Africa. In the neighbourhood are See also:lead, See also:zinc and See also:silver mines, and some 2o m. S. are the Malmani goldfields. The Marico Valley was occupied See also:early in the l9th See also:century by See also:Matabele, who had come from See also:Zululand. They were driven out by See also:Boer trekkers in 1837. To Boer cultivation the valley of the Marico See also:river owes its fertility. See also:Wheat and oats are largely cultivated and almost all sub-tropical fruits flourish. Following the See also:relief of Mafeking, 17th of May 1900, Zeerust was occupied by the See also:British under See also:General R. S. S. See also:Baden-See also:Powell.
