Pop. of See also:urban See also:district (1901) 17,505. It lies at a considerable See also:elevation above the valley of a small stream tributary to the See also:Derwent. The See also:church of St See also:Martin is See also:Early See also:English and later. The neighbourhood abounds in ironworks, collieries, quarries and See also:potteries, and is thickly populated. To the See also:north-See also:east of Alfreton are See also:South See also:Normanton (pop. 5170), See also:Blackwell (4144) and Tibshelf (3432); to the north Shirland (3929), to the south Ironville and other busy See also:industrial villages. The See also:foundation of Alfreton is traditionally ascribed to See also:King See also:Alfred.
