ALHAMA DE See also:GRANADA , a See also:town of See also:southern See also:Spain, in the See also:province of Granada, 24 M. S.W. of Granada. Pop. (1900) 7679. Alhama is finely situated on a ledge of See also:rock which overlooks a deep See also:gorge traversed by the See also:river Marchan or Alhama; while the rugged peaks of the Sierra de Alhama rise behind it to a height of 6800 ft. The town is largely See also:modern; for over one thousand of its picturesque old Moorish houses, which formerly See also:rose in terraces up the See also:mountain See also:side, were destroyed, together with five churches, the See also:hospital, the See also:theatre, the See also:prison, and 800 of the inhabitants, in an See also:earthquake which took See also:place in 1884. Subscriptions were received from all parts of Spain, and the See also:present town was built at a little distance from its predecessor. Few vestiges of antiquity survived, except the See also:baths from which Alhama (in Arabic " the See also:Bath ") derives its name. These are situated near the river, and appear to have been used continuously since See also:Roman times (c. 19 B.C.—A.D. 409). The temperature of the hot sulphurous springs is about 112° F.; and, as the See also:waters are considered beneficial in cases of See also:rheumatism and See also:dyspepsia, many visitors come to Alhama in See also:spring and autumn, attracted also by the See also:fine scenery of the See also:district. In the 15th See also:century Alhama, and the neighbouring fortress of See also:Loja (q.v.), were generally regarded as the keys of the See also:kingdom of Granada, and their See also:capture went far to insure the overthrow of the Moorish See also:power. Alhama was taken by the See also:Spanish See also:marquis of See also:Cadiz in 1482; and its fall is celebrated in an See also:ancient ballad, Ay de mi, Alhama, which See also:Byron translated into See also:English.
