ANDIJAN , a See also:

town of See also:Russian See also:Turkestan, See also:Province of See also:Ferghana, eastern See also:terminus of the Transcaspian railway, 84 m. by See also:rail E.N.E. of See also:Khokand, on the See also:left See also:bank of the upper Syr-darya. See also:Altitude 163o ft. Pop. (1900) 49,682. It was formerly the See also:residence of the khans of Khokand, and has beautiful gardens and a large See also:park in the See also:middle of the town. Andijan is a centre for the See also:trade in raw See also:cotton and has cotton factories. All over Central See also:Asia, See also:West Turkestan merchants are known generally as Andijani. The town was destroyed by an See also:earthquake on the 16th-17th of See also:December 1902, when 5000 persons perished and 16,000 houses were demolished. It has since been rebuilt.
