ANNECY , the See also:

chief See also:town of the See also:department of Haute See also:Savoie in See also:France. Pop. (1906) 10,763. It is situated at a height of 1470 ft., at the See also:northern end of the See also:lake of Annecy, and is 25 M. by See also:rail N.E. of See also:Aix See also:les Bains. The surrounding See also:country presents many scenes of beauty. The town itself is a pleasant See also:residence, and contains a 16th See also:century See also:cathedral See also:church, an 18th century See also:bishop's See also:palace, a 14th–16th century See also:castle (formerly the residence of the See also:counts of the Genevois), and the reconstructed See also:convent of the Visitation, wherein now reposes the See also:body of St See also:Francois de Sales (See also:born at the castle of Sales, See also:close by, in 1567; died at See also:Lyons in 1622), who held the see from 1602 to 1622. There is also a public library, with 20,000 volumes, and various scientific collections, and a public See also:garden, with a statue of the chemist Berthollet (1748–1822), who was born not far off. The bishop's see of See also:Geneva was transferred hither in 1535, after the See also:Reformation, but suppressed in 18or, though revived in 1822. There are factories of See also:linen and See also:cotton goods, and of See also:felt hats, See also:paper See also:mills, and a celebrated See also:bell foundry at Annecy le Vieux. This last-named See also:place existed in See also:Roman times. Annecy itself was in the loth century the See also:capital of the counts of the Genevois, from whom it passed in 1401 to the counts of See also:Savoy, and became See also:French in 186o on the See also:annexation of Savoy. The LAKE OF ANNECY is about 9 M. in length by 2 M. in breadth, its See also:surface being 1465 ft. above the level of the See also:sea.
