AUBENAS , a See also:

town of See also:south-eastern See also:France, in the See also:department of See also:Ardeche, 19 m. S.W. of Privas by road. Pop. (1906) 3976 (town), 7064 (See also:commune). Aubenas is beautifully situated on the slope of a See also:hill, on the right See also:bank of the Ardeche, but its streets generally are crooked and narrow. It has a See also:castle of the 13th and 16th centuries, now occupied by several of the public institutions of the town. These include a tribunal and chamber of See also:commerce, and a conditioning-See also:house for See also:silk. See also:Iron and See also:coal mines are worked in the vicinity. As the centre of the silk See also:trade of See also:southern France Aubenas is a See also:place of considerable See also:traffic. It has also a large silk See also:spinning and See also:weaving See also:industry, and carries on tanning and various See also:minor See also:industries together with trade in silk. The See also:district is See also:rich in plantations of mulberries and See also:olives.
